How to Measure for Fit

This is the canopy that time forgot !

ESC ID 1492 /  AUD $2,300

This is the canopy that time forgot — the one Jules Verne would have tucked between chapters, right after a hot-air balloon and just before a questionable steam engine. It has travelled not forward, but around time: packed carefully, flown gently, and handled with the sort of reverence usually reserved for fine china and cautious Sunday jumpers. The lines tell the story first. They lie there with the quiet confidence of cordage that has never known panic, never felt a rushed pack job, and certainly never been yanked into existence by an over-caffeinated freefly exit. These are lines that have only ever carried the measured mass of a mid-60s, sensible-shoe-wearing, “I’ll take the long spot, thanks” kind of jumper. Lines that have lived a good life.

Then there’s the label. Fourteen years on, still readable. Not “readable if you squint under fluorescent light while holding it at just the right angle,” but genuinely, unapologetically legible. That alone places this canopy in the realm of myth. Anyone who’s handled enough nylon knows how rare that is. NZ Aerosports had a habit back then of building things as if they expected them to be found by archaeologists rather than riggers — and this one proves it. The data panel hasn’t faded into abstract art. It hasn’t surrendered to UV, sweat, or time. It stands there calmly, like Phileas Fogg checking his watch, quietly confident that everything is exactly where it should be.

And then we come to the step. The 170 to 150 transition — the one that usually causes a CI to materialise from nowhere, arms crossed, ready to deliver a lecture that starts with “I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed.” Not here. This is not a Sabre2-170 to Katana-150 act of chaos. This is a civilised downsize. A polite one. A handshake, not a shove. The sort of step that says, “Yes, I’ve thought about this,” rather than, “It’ll be fine, everyone else is doing it.” It flies like it knows its place in the world — responsive without being rude, capable without being demanding.

Altogether, this canopy feels less like equipment and more like a well-travelled companion. It has circumnavigated the sky without ever rushing, survived an era when things were built to last, and arrived here with its dignity intact. If Phileas Fogg jumped, this is what he’d have flown — punctual, predictable, and quietly impressive. The canopy that time forgot… and that time, frankly, didn’t manage to ruin.
